Common Summer Accidents and How to Prevent Them

During the summer months, many of us will be partaking in the typical summer pastimes: taking a dip in the pool, going for drives with friends and families, having barbeques, and lighting fireworks on the Fourth of July.

It’s important to remember that your safety and that of your family comes first. Many of us just want to have a relaxing, fun, and stress-free summer. It is absolutely possible to make this happen while also taking precautions to prevent some common summer accidents.

Pool Accidents

Many of us jump into the swimming pool as soon as the summer hits to escape the heat. Remember that accidents, such as drownings, can happen in as little as 20 seconds. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, drowning remains the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages one to four. It’s essential to always have an adult supervising children while they are in the pool, even if they can swim.

The fact that a child can swim should not deter you from keeping an eye on them in the pool. Even older children and young teens who know how to swim can still become victims of swimming pool or drowning accidents.

Drunk Driving Accidents

Barbeques, pool parties, and outdoor parties are something that many of us look forward to when summer rolls around. It’s not uncommon for party goers to drink alcoholic beverages as well. The sad reality is that some of these individuals choose to get behind the wheel while they are inebriated, especially during holidays like the Fourth of July.

Stats from the IIHS show that about 47 percent of fatal accidents on this holiday are alcohol-related. On top of that, AAA reports that “37.5 million people will drive 50 miles or more from home during the holiday period that stretches from June 30 to July 4,” meaning more cars on the road and more of a chance for accidents.

If you or friends do decide to drink alcohol, make sure you do not get behind the wheel. Call an Uber or Lyft or have a sober friend drive you to your destination. Remember that it’s not worth it to risk your life and the lives of others.

Firework Accidents

Who doesn’t love sparklers and seeing the sky light up on the Fourth of July? What we really don’t think about are the possible dangers that can come with fireworks if we don’t always take the precautions necessary to avoid accidents, which can cause severe burns. If fireworks are legal in your area and you decide to light them during this holiday, the National Safety Council suggests that you:

  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol

  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks

  • Never light them indoors

  • Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material

  • Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting

  • Keep a bucket of water nearby

We hope that you and your family enjoy the summer, but we also want to ensure that you also stay safe and take precautions to prevent accidents and injuries to you and your loved ones.
