$34 MILLION JURY VERDICT AGAINST COXHEALTH HOSPITAL RANKED 58TH LARGEST IN UNITED STATES AND LARGEST MEDICAL MALPRACTICE VERDICT IN MISSOURI IN 2021
Springfield, Mo., July 8th, 2022 – The $34.1 million jury verdict against CoxHealth Hospital in Springfield obtained by the Joplin law firm Johnson, Vorhees & Martucci has been named the 58th largest jury verdict of 2021 in the United States by the National Law Journal and the largest jury verdict for medical malpractice in Missouri during 2021 by Missouri Lawyers Weekly.
Roger Johnson and Scott Vorhees represented the mother of the infant born with severe medical problems in the case, which was tried in March 2021. During labor, the staff at CoxHealth gave the mother increasing doses of the drug Pitocin, causing her contractions to become so frequent and severe that the baby was deprived of oxygen in the womb. That lack of oxygen led to brain damage, quadriplegia, and a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.
“We took on the case to help the family meet its future financial burdens and ensure that CoxHealth and surrounding hospitals improve their standard of care,” said Roger Johnson. “We see this as a victory for the family and for the residents of Springfield and surrounding areas.”
